CranioSacral Therapy is educated, precise, non-intrusive touch that supports your body’s own innate ability to heal. It restores balance in your central nervous system. Just like your cardiovascular and respiratory systems have rhythms, there is also a craniosacral rhythm.
This palpable rhythm is created by the subtle flow of cerebro-spinal fluid. This fluid drains from around your brain and spinal cord at a relatively stable rate and is produced within the system at regular intervals. Fluid production slightly increases pressure in the system. This ebb and flow of pressure is the craniosacral rhythm.
Practitioners use this rhythm to determine whether the body is in balance and where there may be areas of restriction. These restrictions are the result of either physical or emotional trauma. Life experiences are processed through your body; when overwhelming, they are held there.
We have a remarkable ability to store what we can't deal with in the moment, and then to work around what we've stored. Compensation is a useful and effective strategy, as long we have the resources to manage it. When trauma occurs, it can impede the movement of this system, reducing resiliency and potentially leading to dysfunction. Our bodies work around these held experiences until the load becomes too great; that's when we develop symptoms.
When this rhythm is disturbed due to physical or emotional trauma, the body attempts to wall off the area of disturbance, in the form of an energy cyst, in order to maintain the whole organism’s integrity and balance. These are areas of disorganized energy that store memories, physical dysfunction, and beliefs that we acquired about ourselves at the moment of the particular event. Essentially the areas can keep us stuck in the past. A certain event may have happened a long time ago, but these tissues have held onto the injury, pain, emotion, psychic and mental limitation.
Eventually our system is unable to maintain balance and dysfunction becomes evident. Until these stored blocks are released, they can continue to cause pain and may create additional problems.
Trauma may include injuries from:
Feather-light touch is used to gently facilitate the release of restrictions. As these subtle changes take place, some people may experience memories, emotions, or physical sensations. Although this therapy is profound and works from the core, patients report a deep sense of relaxation with effects that continue far beyond the treatment room as the body continues its journey of re-balancing and reorienting.
Since CranioSacral Therapy works directly with the central nervous system and all your body’s regulators, it not only releases restrictions but also strengthens your body’s resistance to illness. You re-gain a sense of vitality and health. You gain physical, emotional and mental resilience. By releasing the energy of traumatic events, you can find more ease and joy in your life.
